Habitat Biologist Technician

Location of Employment: Greys River Ranger District, Bridger-Teton National Forest (office in Afton, Wyoming)

Salary: $2400/mo

Duration of Employment: June 1, 2008 – October 31, 2008 ( approximate; up to 6 months )

Position Description:

The US Forest Service and Wyoming Game and Fish Department have secured startup funding from the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative to conduct the inventory and assessment of aspen communities. Teton Science School is a partner in this effort.

The individual will assist in the assessment of aspen habitat distribution and conditions primarily in the Greys River Ranger District, in northwestern Wyoming . More specifically, the individual will inventory, key, ground-truth, and map habitat types (emphasis on aspen). Work will also involve coordinated application of GIS, aerial photo interpretation, and examination of photographs taken from fixed-wing aircraft in 2007 to preliminarily delineate aspen distribution in key areas of the district. Aspen habitat types will be mapped in GIS and accompanied by a narrative describing existing ecological conditions, threat level, and potential for enhancement. The individual may also assist with data collection and analysis on other, related projects in the area.

Aspen communities are one of the most diverse and productive habitats in Wyoming . However, Wyoming has lost approximately half of its historic aspen acreage due to fire suppression and advanced plant succession. Consequently, maintenance and enhancement of aspen communities on the landscape is a high priority for wildlife and land management agencies.

Skills: Proficient with plant identification/keys and a basic knowledge of monitoring techniques. Ability and willingness to hike extensive distances (3-10 miles/day) during diverse weather conditions. Ability to operate 4-wheel drive pickup and ATV on two-track road and trail conditions. Ability to work unsupervised in remote locations in difficult terrain. Ability to use GPS units and a basic working knowledge of GIS mapping. Willingness to function independently in the field and also as a team member with various interagency personnel working collectively on habitat related projects. Ability to complete a written report including but not limited to, a GIS based map linked to an associated data set and photos, and a narrative addressing the ecological conditions and potential for enhancement of aspen stands within the Grey River Ranger District.
