Volunteer
With a background in nursing, education and several years of info-volunteering in the White Mountain Presidentials, I arrived November 18 to begin volunteering at Teton Science Schools and Grand Teton National Park.
My experience teaching high school biology in an open-concept school with a nature trail to extend the classroom, and my experience as a nurse-therapist helped me to realize the potential for creative learning when both milieus are blended.
Here at Teton Science Schools I find that blend of environmental education within a vibrant community, rich in curiosity and care. Everyone gave me an enthusiastic welcome. Even the mule deer seem tuned in. On my way to breakfast one morning, I met a mule deer six feet away, big warm black eyes holding mine as though I were a curiosity. The deer was quickly joined by three more and eventually the stag appeared, clearly not threatened, and we all seemed to share a mutual curiosity. We stood there with full eye contact for several moments of greeting exchange before ambling along on our separate ways.
What a welcome! Yes, I’m excited to continue this adventure.
