Twenty-five seventh graders from the University of Wyoming Lab School in Laramie are here on campus for our popular Winter Ecology Week. Part of their experience includes a trip to Jackson Hole for a sleigh ride through the Elk Refuge and a visit to the National Wildlife Museum, which overlooks the refuge.

A guide at the Elk Refuge explained that early homesteaders in this area gave up their land and moved in to town where conditions were less harsh. The homesteaders are credited with providing today’s elk an open space for winter. Due to the town’s development on remaining land, previously grazed by elk during winter months, alfalfa pellets are now provided for the elk to help them survive the long winter.
