One of the perks of being here at the Kelly Campus is meeting outstanding science teachers. Mark Winland, who came here initially as an 11th grade student himself, has been bringing his Ecology classes here twice a year for the last eight years.
He values the understanding and appreciation of the natural world his students gain from their Kelly Campus experience. In a light moment, one of his students tried on a horn from a Big Horn Sheep to get an idea of what it might be like to carry such a load.

In the classroom, his number one goal is to ground the students in principles needed to prepare them to make good decisions in the future. He appreciates the critical observation and research skills students learn at Teton Science Schools. The hope is that with their experience at Teton Science Schools and the cooperative background in Gillette, students will be in a position to make ecologically sound decisions in the future.

Laura Greer, a colleague of Mark’s, who brought students from her 9-10th grade science classes, said when interviewed that she valued what students take with them from the Kelly Campus, such as the chance to actually see a moraine. She noted that they retain what they learn here even after they graduate. The eight students she brought with her will go back and teach students who did not come, further strengthening their own learning.
