    At Journeys School, all 10th grade students complete a Personal Project as part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. Each student chooses a topic of personal interest, identifies a goal for their learning, researches their topic, creates a product to address their goal, and reflects on the process.   • The Efficacy of Field-Based Education

    In the summer of 2014, I found myself a few miles up Slough Creek in Yellowstone National Park watching a sow and two grizzly bear cubs saunter through the marsh. Their presence was quiet and graceful; the group of us, 15 undergraduate students and four instructors, including me, became transfixed.

    Experiential education programs have the ability to grow student values and identities through meaningful experiences. But they are stop-overs in life, not ends in themselves. Thus information, skills, and understandings are knowledge-to-go and not just for use on site.
