Summer Enrichment Activities and Resources

Dear Journeys School Families:

Welcome to summer in the Tetons! I hope this letter finds you and your family healthy and happy and excited to kick off the summer months! As one of Journeys School’s Four Pillars, we believe in supporting academic excellence throughout the calendar year. In order to maintain student readiness and to prepare for the 2013-2014 academic year, The Customized Learning Program and high school and middle school faculty have been discussing the importance of continued and intentional summer reading for our students. Therefore, we have created and are implementing required summer reading and writing at the middle and high school levels. Please see the documents listed below for further details.

Similar to years past, elementary faculty have created an enrichment packet filled with subject-specific opportunities to support summer learning.  Research shows that students who read over the summer do better when they return to school in the fall. Research also suggests that the greatest predictor of success in college is the ability to read complex material fluently. For students to attain fluency they must develop the habit of reading. Similarly, math skills practice will help students reach mastery of material and increase their ability to use facts and operations easily and accurately. In the elementary packet, you will find a wealth of information to keep learning alive throughout the summer months.

Summer enrichment provides an opportunity to extend our students’ learning in reading and other content areas throughout the calendar year. It is our hope that the information enclosed will create opportunities for individual reading time and/or enjoyable family learning depending on what your family’s needs are on a given day.  Please also enjoy the “Faculty Favorites” reading list for the entire family.

On behalf of the entire Journeys School faculty, we wish everyone an exciting and rejuvenating summer!

Sincerely,
Travis Gay
Director of Customized Learning
