President Search
Position Purpose:
The President of Teton Science Schools provides visionary leadership and strategic direction to achieve the organization’s mission. This role involves overseeing fundraising, operations, financial management, and program implementation while fostering relationships with stakeholders to ensure sustainability and growth. The President is responsible for aligning the organization’s activities with its values, inspiring staff, and representing the organization to the community and partners. Through strategic planning and innovative leadership, the President ensures the organization’s goals are met effectively and efficiently. The President inspires and leads the senior team as they develop policies and procedures that result in the team achieving the critical objectives and goal established collaboratively with the board and the President. The role of President also involves the continued assessment and development of several TSS programs.
• Demonstrated management and leadership experience in a medium-sized nonprofit or educational organization.
• Abilty to understand complex fiscal issues around a non-profit with several divisions
• Proven experience in fundraising and dealing with high level donors
• Exceptional communication and relationship building skills with program participants, staff, board members and greater community
• Strong problem solving skills
• Awareness of leading practices in running a non profit, prior membership of non-profit associations such as the National Council for Non Profits would be a plus
• Experience of managing and delegating to a group of senior level employees to create unified leadership within the organization
• Experience in conflict resolution and ability to navigate complex staffing issues with success
• Awareness of risk management and legal ramifications of running a non-profit
• Skilled in marketing strategy at a non-profit
• Effective time management skills and ability to prioritize given current circumstances
• Experience in or an awareness of crisis management techniques
• Experience in conservation, outdoor education, and/or environmental organizations a plus.
• Master’s degree in relevant field – Preferred
• Ability to visit students in both indoor and outdoor classrooms throughout all four seasons
• Travel both regionally, nationally, and potentially internationally on a periodic basis.
• Main office location is at the Jackson Campus but maintain presence across all TSS campuses
Leadership
• Gain and maintain positive interaction among the Board of Directors, Staff, the community and other partners
• Inform and direct staff to implement programs that align with the Teton Science Schools mission, values and vision
• Motivate students, staff, and donors with optimism and a bold vision
• Foster a collaborative working environment, encourage professional development, and champion accountability amongst staff
• Build alignment across the organization by maintaining open lines of communication across all levels of the organization
• Manage delicate and confidential information with integrity
• Involve relevant staff in planning, decision-making, facilitation, and process improvement; provide regular performance feedback; and develop subordinates’ skills and encourage growth.
Fundraising
• Cultivate and maintain relationship with major donors
• Actively work with the board of directors to engage volunteers to support and lead fundraising
• Expand fundraising activities to support program operations and strategic growth
• Create a culture of fundraising through strategic planning and ensuring that all TSS staff and Board members can tell the TSS story well.
Community Relations and Communications
• Build and maintain strategic partnerships with foundations and community organizations
• Effectively represent the organization and promote a positive organizational image to ensure adequate community representation
• Speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations, demonstrate group presentation skills, and conduct productive meetings
• Communicate the status of the organization’s operations to the board of directors and to staff (where appropriate)
Financial Oversight
• Oversee the organization’s financial structure, ensuring adequate and sound funding for the mission and goals of the organization.
• Raise additional capital at appropriate valuations to enable the organization to meet sales, growth and market share objectives.
Governance
• Work with the board of directors and other executives to establish short-term objectives and long-range goals, and related plans and policies.
• Ensure adherence to legal and ethical standards, following best practices in the goverance of a non profit.
• Assess and manage potential risks to the organization and develop strategies to mitigate potential risk.
