Winter Journey A Great Success
The high school winter journey was very successful. Eleventh and twelfth grade students who completed the International Baccalaureate integrated sciences project did well to tie it to the Jackson Hole area. The theme was change. Students examined snow density compared to slope aspect, EKG ratings between indoor and outdoor exposure, snow water equivalency in lower meadows at the TSS Kelly Campus, and ph of snow in relationship to proximity to pollution sources such as vehicles and drip lines of roofs. Ninth and tenth grade students spent three great days outside reading, writing, tracking species, and learning about the Muries and their legacy. They also created a group species account. Elk mediation was a topic of discussion, and there were also discussions about the high school community. All students spent time Nordic skiing, and they also enjoyed the annual dance competition. Many thanks to Charlotte Q, Erin G, and Nate T for helping out, and thanks to the staff of the Kelly Campus for their excellent facilities and hospitality.

High School Physical Education
Beginning Monday, February 27, students in PE will be ditching the broomball sticks, leaving the ice and heading back into the Education Center, because it is time to learn some mixed martial arts! Our MMA unit will be featuring Sensei Sue from the Wyoming Karate Club as well as other guest instructors from the around the valley. It is imperative that students remember to bring and wear indoor athletic shoes suitable for this physical activity. To be extra clear, students may NOT wear: indoor slippers, dress shoes, “just socks” or any shoes that have been worn outside in the snow. Please help your student remember these important safety details.

Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay Begin for Eleventh Grade Class
Teacher Mark Leichliter has begun teaching the International Baccalaureate Theory of Knowledge course and Extended Essay to the eleventh grade class. Both the course and essay are required parts of the IB diploma program core. Both begin spring semester of eleventh grade year and finish at the end of fall semester twelfth grade year. In Theory of Knowledge, students learn how humans learn and gain knowledge. Students complete readings as homework and spend significant amounts of class time discussing ideas. Mark prepares regular assessments and there are two official IB assessments, an oral presentation, and an essay. Extended Essay is an extended research project that students design, plan, and complete. Students conduct research in one of the six subject areas of the diploma program: English, Spanish, social studies, sciences, math, or visual arts. Although Mark is the supervisor, the project is largely self-guided and students also work with a faculty advisor that can be any teacher at Journeys School.
