Teton Science Schools of Jackson, Wyoming is seeking a highly motivated and experienced science educator to join our faculty team. Faculty host Field Education programs, mentor educators and coordinate administrative aspects of Field Education. In the hosting role, faculty work with trip leaders of youth, family and adult groups to customize and implement field science programs in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Each faculty observes and mentors members of our instructor team, serving as a catalyst for individuals’ continuous growth as educators. In addition to these shared responsibilities, each member of the faculty team has a focus area that includes programmatic visioning, development of systems, oversight of risk management, training, programming, budgeting, logistics and record keeping. A primary focus for this position is the coordination of adult, family and camping programs. Oversight of camping programs includes frontcountry and backcountry camping and the creation of systems that manage camping equipment and training.

Field Education Faculty Responsibilities

  • Attend all Field Education faculty meetings and trainings
  • Train, evaluate and develop a team of educators to assure the implementation of thematic, place-based, hands-on curriculum for field days and evening programs
  • Work with visiting groups to develop customized, high-quality, natural science and environmental education programs for adult, family, and/or youth residential and nonresidential programming
  • Coordinate the design, marketing, recruitment, and implementation of backcountry camping programs for 7th-9th grade students
  • Create and maintain systems to manage camping equipment use across the organization 
  • Mentor a team of educators in facilitating programs that include:
    - Place-based education
    - Field science
    - Leadership in community
    - Inquiry-based learning
    - Hiking, backcountry travel, front country camping and backcountry living
    - Management of participant risk and empowerment of participants to become risk managers during all instructor-led activities
  • Assist with administrative duties necessary for high quality programs and efficient customer service
  • Manage and schedule resources: teaching supplies, technology, vehicles, residence lodges, teaching spaces and outdoor equipment
  • Design program and staff schedules in conjunction with staff and visiting groups
  • Drive 15 passenger vans, mini-buses and trailers to transport students, staff and equipment to field sites

Field Education Qualifications

  • Experience creating, implementing and evaluating field science curriculum
  • Experience mentoring and evaluating educators
  • Experience working with diverse audiences
  • Understanding of organizational systems and ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams and departments
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and in person, superior organizational skills and experience with Google Apps
  • Willingness to take initiative, solve problems and manage a variety of tasks calmly, effectively and with humor
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience creating trainings and mentoring educators on risk management, judgment and decision making
  • Experience creating, planning and evaluating camping programs, systems and trainings
  • Experience working with families and adults and training educators to work with families and adults

  • Experience managing budgets preferred
  • Ability to hike at least five miles while carrying a full backpack
  • Willingness to work long hours and untraditional work weeks including some nights, holidays and weekends
  • Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications valid through November 2017
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in science, education or related field. Master’s degree in science, education or related field preferred
  • Spanish language skills preferred
