No School - Día de la Raza
Monday, October 12

October 12 will be a no-school day for all grades. Día de la Raza or Day of the Race it is a day to celebrate the heritage of the Americas and, by extension, the multicultural heritage of all those races and cultures which contributed to it. It is also celebrated on October 12 in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela. This day honors the forging of a new identity, built from elements of Native American societies combined with European culture. In many Caribbean and Latin American countries, the African component of the compound is particularly emphasized. This new racial and cultural identity, often called Latino/a or "mestizo/a," is an emergent one. Dia de la Raza asks students to reflect upon the proud history of the United States and the changing face of our community. ¡Feliz Dia de la Raza!

Día de los Muertos
Friday, October 30

This year, the entire Journeys School student body will participate in the honoring Day of the Dead. This celebration will take place during the all school meeting Friday, October 30 from 2:20-3:20 in the Education Center of the Jackson Campus. Each family group will take a “museum tour” exploring ten different stations ranging from traditional crafts and games to historical information. Stations will be hosted in Spanish by Journeys School students.
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated in Latin American countries, as well as the United States. The holiday commemorates the Day of the Dead or All Souls’ Day on November 2nd. The holiday is not a mournful commemoration but a happy and colorful celebration where death takes a lively, friendly expression. Indigenous people believed that souls did not die, that they continued living in Mictlan, a special place to rest. In this place, the spirits rest until the day they could return to their homes to visit their relatives.
Modern observations vary from region to region. In some areas, families adorn grave sites with candles, marigolds, and the favorite foods of deceased relatives in an attempt to persuade the loved ones to return for a family reunion. In others, people take to the streets for festive celebrations and indulge in the consumption of food and drink. Some wear wooden skull masks known as calacas. Many families build altars, called ofrendas, in their homes, using photos, candles, flowers, and food.
