Friday Classes on a Thursday
On Thursday, October 26th we will run a Friday schedule. This supports classes that miss many Fridays throughout the year. (Friday, October 27 is a no school day.)

9/10 Environmental Science Mini-Journey to R-Park
On this past Thursday (10/5) and the coming Monday (10/9), 9th and 10th grade students traveled (or will be traveling) across town to R-Park to spend time exploring with Pre-K, K, and 1st grade students. Both the 9/10 and PreK-1st grade students have been exploring what it means to be a naturalist and have practiced making observations of the natural world. The purpose of the mini-journey for the 9/10 students is to explore what the natural world looks like through the eyes of a younger human and consider a different perspective. The mini-journey will happen rain or shine (or snow).

Experts in English class

Widely published author - and Journeys School parent - Tim Sandlin visited the eleventh grade English class on Wednesday to teach students techniques for writing humor. Sandlin, a humorist, spoke with students about how simple language choices can make a piece funny or serious. Students are working on satire narratives as they examine local issues concurrent with the study of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Our thanks to Tim for sharing his time and expertise.

Save the Date and Volunteer for Model UN!
InterConnections 21 (IC21) will be hosting the 12th annual Teton County Model United Nations (TCMUN) Conference from November 12 – 14, 2017. All Journeys School 9-10 students will be representing the interests of different countries as they tackle global issues while taking part in this simulation of the workings of the United Nations. There are many opportunities for parents and friends of TCMUN to be involved as volunteers! On Sunday, November 12, we will host a reception from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. right here at Journeys School. Please consider donating your time to help set up and break down this reception, or bring food to share with other attendees. The main conference will take place at the Jackson Hole High School from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, November 13 and Tuesday, November 14. We will be looking for volunteers for a variety of positions on these days: setting up, checking coats, helping at the registration table, picking up lunches, staffing the snack/break room, breaking down, etc. We will also be looking for volunteers to bring in food for the snack room.

In the coming weeks, you will receive an online sign-up form with time slots for each volunteer activity. If you have any questions or comments, please email Drew at drew.overholser@journeysschool.org or IC21 executive director Lindsey Ehinger at lindsey@ic21.org. Thank you in advance for helping execute another successful TCMUN Conference!

More Model UN news
Each year the local high schools and IC21 offer the opportunity of taking part in a large Model UN conference hosted by a university or MUN association. Past destinations have included Berkeley, Vancouver, and Washington DC. This year a student steering committee has selected the Johns Hopkins University MUN Conference (JHUMUNC). It takes place February 8 – 11, 2018, in Baltimore, MD. InterConnections 21 and the Model UN advisors (Drew Overholser at Journeys School) will be hosting an information night for parents and students at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10 at the Jackson Hole Community School. (There are a limited number of spaces available for the trip, so students must apply; applications are due on October 13). Please attend the meeting on October 10 if you would like more information about this popular and rewarding trip!
