Take a Virtual Field Trip with Teton Science Schools on this Google Expedition

Since our foundation in 1967, students have been journeying to Teton Science Schools’ campuses — from near and far — to learn science in the field. The experience is hands-on, it’s experiential, and it’s rooted in this place — the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. It brings our students and leaders closer to the people and places all around them, deepens their understanding and gives them clarity and courage to make change in their world. Simply put, the field education experience is transformative.

Unfortunately, for so many students this season, that in-person experience has been cancelled.

When we made the difficult decision to suspend residential field programs last month, we knew how devastating the news would be for so many of the schools — veteran and new — who had their hopes on making the journey.

Fortunately, with the help of Google Expeditions, we’ve created a virtual day in the field at one of our most popular teaching sites in Grand Teton National Park.

Here’s how to join:

  1. Download the Google Expeditions app on your phone or tablet for iOs or Android.
  2. Once downloaded, open the app and use the search field at the top to search for, “Grand Teton”. The tour you’re looking for is called “Exploring Geology and Ecology: A Hike in Grand Teton National Park” ” If you’re currently reading this on your device, you can also click the link here.
  3. Once the tour has downloaded, tap “View”, then “Start”.
  4. Each slide on the tour offers a panoramic view of the point of interest. You can slide your finger across the screen — up, down, left and right — to move the camera. You can also tap on the information cards to see more information about the point of interest as well as beginner, intermediate and advanced prompt questions for students (or adults!).
  5. To move on to the next point of interest, swipe left and repeat step 5.

*If you have a cardboard VR viewer, you can also insert your phone into the viewer and experience the expedition in virtual reality.

We hope you enjoy this virtual day in the field! If you take the journey and love it, be sure to share it with your friends on Facebook or Instagram and tag us @tetonscience!
