What to Pack for Summer Backpacking in the Tetons

June in the Tetons means it’s time to finally pull out that summer backpacking and camping gear and prepare to explore the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem on foot! While snow is still present at upper elevations, many trails are ready to be explored deep into the backcountry. At Teton Science Schools, we are fortunate to run several backcountry trips each summer, providing students with the unforgettable opportunity to immerse themself in this unique landscape. When our educators head out for an overnight backpacking trip, they never leave without the following:

 

Clothing:

  • 1 Non-cotton shirt
  • 1 Lightweight fleece or wool layer
  • 1 Puffy jacket
  • 1 Rain shell
  • 1 Pair of shorts
  • 1 Pair of hiking pants
  • 1 Pair of warm pants
  • 1 Pair of rain pants
  • 2 Pairs of undergarments

 

Footwear:

  • 2 Pairs of socks (Wool or synthetic blend)
  • 1 Pair of supportive, closed-toed hiking shoes
  • 1 Pair of lightweight closed-toed camp shoes

 

Overnight Gear:

  • 1 Internal-frame backpack (60 liters or greater)
  • 1 Lightweight sleeping bag (rated 25° or lower)
  • 1 Inflatable or closed-cell foam sleeping pad
  • 1 Tent with waterproof fly

 

Camp Kitchen:

  • 1 Whisperlite camp stove
  • 1 Lightweight cooking pot
  • 1 Bowl
  • 1 Spork or set of utensils
  • 1 Mug
  • 1 Lighter
  • 1 Bear canister for storing all smellables

 

Miscellaneous:

  • 1 Baseball cap
  • 1 Winter hat for nighttime
  • 1 headlamp
  • 1 Pair of sunglasses
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Optional entertainment (a book, deck of cards, journal, etc.)
