In Memory of Dr. Jane Goodall: Honoring a Legacy of Hope

Today, the world pauses to remember the incomparable Dr. Jane Goodall, a visionary scientist, storyteller, and changemaker whose life’s work reshaped the way we understand our deep connection to the natural world.

At Teton Science Schools, we were humbled to honor Dr. Goodall in 2022 with the Murie Spirit of Conservation Award, recognizing her tireless dedication to wildlife, communities, and the future of our planet. That evening, the theme was hope—a word that defined not only her message but her way of being in the world.

Dr. Goodall taught us that hope is not naïve, but necessary. She showed us that every action, no matter how small, can make a profound difference—whether planting a tree, protecting an endangered species, or inspiring a young person to believe they can shape a better future. Her work through the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots program empowered generations across the globe to act with compassion and courage.

Her spirit resonates deeply with the legacy of Olaus and Mardy Murie, who championed the wild with conviction and love. Just as the Muries called us to safeguard wilderness, Dr. Goodall called us to recognize our kinship with all living beings. Both remind us that conservation is not only about protecting landscapes and species, but about nurturing our own humanity.

As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the immeasurable impact of her life. We carry forward her message: to live gently, to protect the wild, and to foster hope, always hope, for the generations to come.

Thank you, Dr. Goodall, for showing us what it means to live with compassion and courage. Your legacy will continue to guide us.
