Language of Materials: Exploring Mark Making with Young Children

In the spirit of the Reggio Emilia approach, children have a hundred languages—countless ways of thinking, expressing, listening, inventing, and making meaning. Join us for a virtual exploration of the studio as we look closely at the language of mark making and the many possibilities it can offer young children.

Our evening will begin by exploring what mark making can look like with children through examples from practice and past projects. We will consider how children use marks to communicate ideas, tell stories, investigate materials, and make their thinking visible. Participants will explore a variety of tools, materials, and surfaces while considering how thoughtful invitations and environments can support deeper exploration.

Following an introduction and instructional period, participants will have time for open-ended exploration with materials sent prior to the workshop, along with opportunities for reflection and small-group discussion. Together, we will consider how to introduce mark making in ways that support curiosity, experimentation, and confidence for both children and educators.

Come ready to play, explore, and connect with other early childhood educators. Just as we invite children to investigate ideas through many different languages, this workshop will invite you to slow down, experiment, and see familiar materials through new lenses and perspectives.
