Creekside Wonder Market

At Waggoner Creek, the school year culminated in a student-led community market and showcase that brought place-based learning to life through the lenses of ecology, economy, and culture. Rooted in the Place Triangle framework, students across grade levels explored meaningful connections to their community and shared their learning with families and community members through hands-on products, experiences, and leadership opportunities.

Kindergarten students focused on ecology through activities such as planting seeds, creating nature bookmarks, and learning about gardening and local plants. First-grade students explored the economic side of the Place Triangle through the concepts of producers and consumers, learning about buying, selling, and donations, as well as how goods and services move through a community. Second-grade students focused on culture by serving as the documentary crew for the day. Using cameras and interview questions, students photographed the event, captured videos, and interviewed students, families, and community members about their experiences.

Older students also played an important role in the event’s success. Third graders showcased leadership binders as part of Leadership Day, fourth graders hosted an art show, and fifth graders created signs and advertisements and helped manage transitions throughout the market.

Community partnerships played a major role in supporting student learning throughout the year. Local community members shared expertise in gardening, baking, and essential oils, helping students make authentic connections between classroom learning and the world around them. During the event, families and visitors also contributed to a student-led “Wonder Wall,” where they shared ideas, hopes, and possibilities for future community projects.

One of the highlights of the year was the opportunity for students to hatch chicken eggs donated by a teacher. Students eagerly watched the chicks hatch through a live feed and later decorated special take-home boxes for families who adopted chicks during the market event, creating another meaningful connection between learning, community, and care for living things.

What stood out most throughout the showcase was the confidence and ownership students demonstrated. After extensive preparation and practice, students were able to clearly explain their products, learning, and understanding of place-based education to authentic audiences. The event became more than a market; it became a celebration of student voice, collaboration, leadership, and community connection.

Through donation-based sales, the market raised more than $1,300 for two local homeless shelter organizations, reinforcing Waggoner Creek’s commitment to service, civic responsibility, and meaningful community impact.
