2010 AmeriCorp volunteers have much to be proud of as they leave Teton Science Schools. Although their service to the organization and in the region formally ended on November 12, 2010 their accomplishments have left a lasting impact on the valley and those they have worked with during their time here. One example of such service occurred on November 1, 2010.
Megan Zaranek, Martha Sample, Matt Gregory and Katie Epstein took advantage of a no school day to implement a full day of programming for elementary students. This program capitalized on location and utilized Grand Teton National Park to encourage students to explore and play in the outdoors. The day was packed with educational activities that focused on animal migration and adaptations while encouraging students to look at their surroundings through the eyes of a naturalist.
The afternoon culminated at the Center for the Arts with hands on activities inspired by student experiences earlier in the day. This was a huge success for the students who participated and all the partners involved. At the end of the day, Teton Science Schools AmeriCorp volunteers had collaborated with The National Park Trust, the Center of Wonder, the Center for the Arts and Teton County Parks and Recreation Center as well as supporting the First Lady’s Let’s Move campaign, an initiative to get America’s Youth moving and work towards ending childhood obesity.
