August in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is a time of incredible natural spectacle, and for many, the highlight is the thundering drama of the bison rut. As the peak of summer unfolds, these magnificent animals engage in their annual mating season, offering visitors dramatic and unforgettable viewing opportunities.
The bison rut is characterized by intense competition among bulls for breeding rights. During August, you have the potential to witness powerful displays of dominance, including loud, guttural bellows that echo across the Yellowstone valley, bulls wallowing (rolling in the soil) after just urinating on the spot in order to attract females, and impressive head-to-head clashes as bulls prepare for battle. “The winners earn the right to mate with receptive females. Once a bull has found a female who is close to estrus, he will stay by her side until she is ready to mate. Then he moves on to another female.” – National Park Service.
While bison can be seen throughout Yellowstone, the Hayden and Lamar Valleys are particularly renowned as prime locations to observe the rut. Here, large herds congregate, and the open landscapes provide excellent vantage points to witness the action. Visiting Grand Teton National Park? Highway 191, South of Moran Junction, is a prime location for viewing these animals during their mating season. No matter where you see them, be prepared for “bison jams”- traffic delays caused by bison on or near the roads- as these are common during the mating season.
Beyond the sheer power of the rut, August also presents an opportunity to observe the subtle dynamics within the herds. You might see bulls isolating females for mating, or younger males testing their strength against more experienced rivals. It’s a truly immersive experience that connects you to the wild heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
