At Mountain Academy, we are passionate about connecting students with the natural world, and our middle school Winter Journey is a perfect example of how we make that happen. Recently, our middle school students had the incredible opportunity to immerse themselves in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem for a hands-on learning experience like no other.
Using snowshoes and cross-country skis, students explored plant communities, learning how abiotic factors—like temperature, moisture, and sunlight—shape their growth in the winter months. They delved into the unique challenges that winter presents for plants and animals, giving them a deeper understanding of how ecosystems function and adapt in the colder months.
At the Kelly campus, the students took their learning to the next level by studying wildlife adaptations in the winter. They also dug snow pits to analyze the snowpack, gaining insights into how it impacts recreation, wildlife, and the environment as a whole. This field-based scientific exploration not only broadened their knowledge of winter ecology but also enhanced their problem-solving and analytical skills.
Beyond the scientific discoveries, the Winter Journey strengthened the sense of community among students. Through shared experiences, teamwork, and reflection, they built lasting bonds and developed a deeper connection to one another and the natural world.
This hands-on learning opportunity allowed our middle schoolers to gain a richer understanding of winter ecology, while fostering curiosity, independence, and collaboration. It’s an experience that will stay with them long after the snow melts!
