Place-Based Education Deep Dive: Virtual Book Study

In this virtual workshop, teacher participants will have the opportunity to go deeper into topics of place-based education through a book study.

In this virtual workshop, teacher participants will have the opportunity to go deeper into topics of place-based education through a book study. Teacher participants will choose one of the two books to focus on for the course:

The course will include weekly readings, reflection posting, and responses to others reflections.  Then there will be a virtual group meeting to discuss key elements, learnings, and applications in further detail.  Each virtual session will also give participants a chance to explore a key idea from the reading in further detail. Virtual sessions will be held on Zoom on the following dates: July 9, July 16, July 23, and July 30.

The course will conclude with teacher participants planning a place-based project or unit to implement in the coming school year. Follow-up assignment will be due August 6th, 2020.

Teams of at least 2 teachers from a school or district are encouraged to attend together to consider applications to their school and community.

Teacher participants should purchase the book option of their choice in advance. We have noticed shipping seems to take longer than usual, so if you have not already, please purchase the book for the topic you plan to focus on for the course.  To practice our place-based approach, we are partnering with Valley Bookstore in Jackson, WY to sell and ship books.  You can contact Valley Bookstore at (307) 733-4533 or email at sashley@rmisp.com to order your copy (they’ll ship it!). You can also purchase a copy online via Bookshop where you can connect to local book stores near you or have your purchase contribute to local bookstores nationwide.

Participants can anticipate spending 15-20 hours over the 5 weeks on course activities.

One credit is available through the University of Wyoming (cost is $50), or one CEU is available through the Wyoming PTSB. Certificates of completion can be provided afterwards.

Registration will be open until July 5, 2020.
