Teacher participants will choose one of the two books to focus on for the course. The flow of the course will include weekly readings, reflection posting, and responses to others’ reflections. Then, there will be a virtual group meeting to discuss key elements, learnings, and applications in further detail. Each virtual session will also give participants a chance to explore a key idea from the reading in further detail. The course will conclude with teacher participants planning a place-based project or unit to implement in the coming school year.
Participants can anticipate spending 15-20 hours over the 5 weeks on course activities. Teacher participants should purchase the book option of their choice in advance. This summer’s book options include:
- Place-Based Education: The Power of Place: Authentic learning through place-based education by Tom Vander Ark, Emily Liebtag, and Nate McClennen
- Project-Based Learning: Setting the Standard for Project Based Learning by John Larmer, John Mergendoller, and Suzie Boss
We encourage teacher participants to purchase the books through a local bookstore.
Registration closes June 29, 2022 at 12 pm. The course start date is listed as 6/29 due to pre-course work required of participants prior to the first session on July 6, however, there are no virtual meetings prior to 7/6.
