College Placement

Portrait of a Graduate

Members of our learning community are committed to academic rigor, character development and community connections. With a deep connection and appreciation for people, place and nature, Mountain Academy graduates are global citizens and lifelong learners who make meaningful contributions to the world, place, and nature.

Meet the Director of College Placement

Beth has spent over 20 years in college counseling roles, both at the college and school levels. She joined Teton Science Schools in 2017, where she offers upper school students highly personalized attention to help them showcase their individual qualities and unique place-based high school experience. Beth visits the Jackson Campus from her home in Maine six times a year to work directly with students and their families; she is always available for virtual meetings throughout the year. Beth earned her BA in Psychology from Williams College and received a Public Policy Fellowship from the Coro Foundation in New York City. She loves getting to know so many wonderful Teton Science School students and their families.

The Mountain Academy

Process

Freshmen

Freshman students and their families are introduced to our college counselor, Beth, to preview the college process. Families are invited to schedule a one-on-one parent meeting upon request, and freshmen participate in a class meeting in both the winter and spring. Mountain Academy freshmen complete the 9/10 PSAT to prepare for upcoming standardized testing.

Sophomores

Sophomores prepare how to best develop their interests and talents, while also preparing the best college visiting strategies. Students have the opportunity to meet with representatives from colleges throughout the United States that come to Mountain Academy. Sophomore students and their families are introduced to college research tools and are welcome to schedule a one-on-one meeting with Beth. They also complete the 9/10 PSAT and have class meetings in the fall, winter, and spring.

Juniors

Juniors at Mountain Academy are fully immersed in the college process by participating in bimonthly class meetings as well as one-on-one meetings with Beth. In October, junior students complete the NMSQT/PSAT, and junior families are encouraged to attend the family meeting on how to finance college. Student and parent inventories are due in December, and families participate in the College 101 meeting. The ACT is administered in March at Mountain Academy for all juniors to complete, followed by a junior class workshop, Open Common App, in May.

Rising Seniors

During the summer between junior and senior year, rising seniors, determine 8-10 colleges for their applications and work on writing their personal essays, while working side-by-side with Beth through monthly Zoom meetings. Rising seniors are encouraged to determine teachers to support applications and identify supplemental essay requirements. During this time, rising seniors also register for the summer or fall ACT or SAT test.

Seniors

Mountain Academy seniors work through the phases of the application process by securing teacher recommendations and completing supplemental essays from September through November. Beth hosts a final family meeting to discuss financial aid and any lingering questions about the final steps of the college process. Seniors complete and submit their college applications between November and January.
