Last week, instructors from the Jackson Campus took Cheyenne elementary students on field trips into Mylar Park and the Laramie County School District Outdoor Education Center. Two weeks ago, graduate students taught a program to all 122 6th grade students at Lander Middle School focused on water, scientific research and sense of place with a field trip to Sinks Canyon State Park. Next week, the graduate students will be back on the road with programs in Casper taking students from three elementary schools to explore the North Platte River and Garden Creek.
This fall’s outreach programs are in schools where teachers have been part of the year-long Place Learning and Civic Education professional development. The outreach programs, taught by Teton Science Schools’ graduate students and instructors, provide opportunities for students in Casper, Lander, Saratoga, Encampment and Cheyenne to go on field trips and learn more about science. Teachers get the chance to see another instructor work with their students and learn new ideas for work in their classrooms.
Additional outreach programs in Jackson, Wyoming and Driggs, Idaho focused on fire ecology and helping students to understand fire management and explore recently burned areas.
